What the profession involves
The healthcare assistant, together with the nurse and the client, establishes a care plan in which care priorities are determined.
The healthcare assistant:
- monitors the client’s health status within a structured team, under the supervision of a nurse.
- assists the client in the activities of daily living.
- performs delegated nursing actions in accordance with legislation.
- is responsible for body care, comfort care, prevention, health education and logistical support for the client.
- performs care for various target groups in different contexts, such as hospitals, residential care centres, and home care.
- deals with context in a flexible manner and takes initiative within the boundaries of the legislative framework, the quality framework and professional ethics.
- is aware that mistakes made can have far-reaching consequences for the client.

If you want to demonstrate your experience as a healthcare assistant at a validation body, you do so through a practical test with integrated role playing and an interview.
The language of instruction in the tests is Dutch.
You will be tested on your ability to:
- organise the care of a minimum of three clients at a time:
- plan the individual care of clients,
- work together with the clients,
- support clients’ self-reliance
- encourage and guide clients in at least one meaningful use of time,
- report on the care in the digital health record
- evaluate the care with client participation and make adjustments
- work together with the interdisciplinary team
- reflect on and adjust your own actions
- deal with feedback in a constructive manner
- work according to current developed protocols within the organisation
- ensure the preparation, serving and clearing of meals for at least one client
- provide patient transport for at least one client
- clean, disinfect and decontaminate at least one room
- clean and carry out simple sterilisation of care equipment
- take care of the living environment of at least one client.
- perform first aid in emergency situations:
- recognise life-threatening situations and intervene according to prescribed procedure
- ensure the client’s safety,
- alert internal managers or supervisors or external emergency services according to the client’s condition and severity,
- apply the necessary first aid,
- intervene in case of swallowing disorders,
- perform BLS (basic life support) with and without an AED (automated external defibrillator).
If you can present a certificate of basic first aid training that is not older than 5 years, you do not have to take the first aid test.
