How to obtain a driving licence in Flanders?

A motorcycle, car, van, bus, truck, agricultural vehicle, fast e-bike: if you want to drive a vehicle on public roads you need a driving licence. Each type of vehicle requires a different driving licence, different training and different tests.

Eyesight test and solemn declaration

If you pass your theory exam, you must take an eyesight test immediately afterwards and declare that you are medically fit to drive. If you do not pass the eyesight test you must visit an ophthalmologist.

Vehicle for the practical test

You may take each practical test with your own vehicle or a vehicle from the driving school.

Adapted theory test

Since 2023, you can take the theory exam with audio interpreter. You can choose from French, German or English. You will hear the questions and answer options first in Dutch and then in the language you have chosen. When you register at the ticket office, indicate that you want to take the exam with audio interpreter and the language you prefer. Bringing a sworn interpreter to the exam is no longer possible.

You pay the basic rate + 41 euros extra for the audio interpretation.

Fees

  • Theory test: 18 euros. Assistance from an interpreter for the deaf or an interpreter for French, German or English: 55 euros.
